Acupuncture

How does Acupuncture work?

Qi is a functional aspect of Chinese medicine that can be translated as “breath.”  Qi courses through the body on pathways called meridians which cover the body somewhat like nerves and blood vessels.  Over 2000 years ago, the Chinese mapped the meridians and specific points along them where Qi is easily accessed.  They used both anatomical dissection and deep meditation to understand the connection between physical anatomy and functional aspects of Qi flow.

I will apply the knowledge of this system, along with the information you provide during the interview to choose and treat specific acupuncture points.  During treatment you may experience a deep relaxation as the free flow of Qi is reestablished.

Is Acupuncture safe?

When performed by a fully trained, licensed professional, it is very safe.  I only use sterile, individually wrapped disposable needles.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

The needles used are extremely thin and nothing like a needle used for taking blood or injections.  In most cases you will probably not even know the needles are there.  In some cases, there may be sensations of tingling, warming, heaviness, or slight pressure which are due to the obtaining of Qi underneath the needle.  Most people find acupuncture to be quite relaxing and often fall asleep during treatment.

How many treatments do I need?

Each individual will receive a treatment plan based on their unique presentation.  Some acute conditions may be treated in 1 or 2 sessions, while chronic ones may need 10 to 12.  If you are experiencing a degenerative condition, acupuncture can be effective with maintenance treatments over time.

What can I expect after treatment?

Most people feel extremely relaxed.  You may need to take a few minutes to get your feet under you after the treatment.  It is important to get up slowly.  Some people experience immediate reduction in their symptoms, while others may not feel the full effects for up to 1 or 2 days later.  Depending on your condition, the symptoms may return, or the results can last for quite a long time.  The more treatments you receive, the longer the results will last.

What do I need to know?

Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing to your treatments.  Once the needles are in it is best to relax and not change positions suddenly as this could cause the needles to move and lead to discomfort or pain. Also on the day of your treatment please be sure to eat your regular meals and be hydrated. Having an empty stomach or being dehydrated is not optimal for treatment.
